The wall is not one thing
Late collapse can involve depleted carbohydrate availability, accumulated muscular damage, heat, dehydration, overdrinking, stomach trouble, poor pacing, insufficient training, or several at once. Calling every bad final 10K “the wall” hides the decision that needs correction.
Four defenses
- Train the week: consistent volume and long runs matter more than one heroic session.
- Protect the opening: an aggressive first 10K consumes resources before the race becomes demanding.
- Fuel on schedule: begin the practiced plan before hunger and mental fog.
- Respect conditions: heat, wind, hills, and illness can require a slower goal.
NYRR connects repeated long runs with fueling efficiency and late-race fatigue rehearsal, and recommends experimenting with products to build an individual fueling and hydration plan.
Diagnose after the race
Compare splits, effort, weather, fuel consumed, fluid, stomach response, and training—not just the finishing pain. If pace fell after an aggressive start, the answer may not be more gels. If the stomach failed, adding more fuel without changing form or timing may repeat the problem.
Keep the ordinary weeks moving
Run More! You can do it!
RunTeaming is a running game for iPhone and Android. Your best qualifying run of the week becomes your score on a five-runner team. The app supplies the team and matches it against another team near its level, so you do not recruit anyone or share a time or location.
