Marathon Pace Strategy

Set an opening ceiling, run the first 10K quietly, and delay every optional decision until after 30K.

Plain answerSet a pace ceiling for the opening 10K, not an ambitious pace target. Settle into trained effort through halfway and make no optional surge before 30K. If breathing, stomach, legs, weather, and splits all agree after 30K, increase gradually. Otherwise maintain the plan.

Start to 10K: refuse the loan

Fresh legs, crowds, downhill sections, and adrenaline make an unsustainable pace feel free. It is borrowed effort. Let runners go, avoid weaving, and stay under the opening ceiling even if the goal pace feels unusually easy.

10K to halfway: run the card

Hold the rehearsed effort, take fuel and water on schedule, and watch course position rather than negotiating every watch fluctuation. Hills, turns, GPS error, and congestion can distort instantaneous pace.

Halfway to 30K: audit, do not attack

Check breathing, stomach, gait, temperature, and the difference between planned and actual effort. Halfway is too early to cash in a good feeling. Correct a small drift; do not manufacture a breakthrough.

After 30K: earn the choice

Only now consider a gradual increase—and only when the full system agrees. If conditions or the body say no, maintaining pace is an active decision, not a failure.

Race cardStart ceiling → quiet 10K → scheduled fuel → halfway audit → no optional move before 30K.

RunTeaming is a running game for iPhone and Android. Your best qualifying run of the week becomes your score on a five-runner team. The app supplies the team and matches it against another team near its level, so you do not recruit anyone or share a time or location.
