How Much Should You Run Each Week for a Marathon?

Start with volume you already tolerate, then build frequency and long-run support without chasing one magic total.

Plain answerThere is no universal marathon mileage. Published beginner plans may build from roughly 25 miles to around 40 per week, but the correct starting point is volume you already tolerate. A long run needs a supporting week; it should not become nearly all your running.

Start with recent reality

Use several normal weeks, not your single largest week, as the baseline. If a template opens far above it, add base weeks or select a different plan. Training history, pace, age, injury history, terrain, and available recovery all change the useful number.

The B.A.A. novice plan illustrates one real structure: about four running days, an opening near 25 weekly miles, peak weeks near 40, and long runs up to 16–18 miles.

Inspect the shape of the week

  • Does most running remain easy enough to repeat?
  • Is the long run supported by other regular runs?
  • Are demanding sessions separated?
  • Can sleep, appetite, work, and ordinary movement remain normal?
  • Do lighter weeks appear before fatigue becomes a crisis?

Increase the smallest useful amount

No percentage rule guarantees safety. Add only enough duration or distance to create the intended training change, and hold or reduce when recovery falls behind. Do not increase mileage, intensity, long-run distance, and strength load simultaneously.

Mileage is not the finish line

Race execution also requires goal-effort practice, fueling, hydration, hills or descents when course-relevant, and the ability to run patiently in a crowd. A large total does not automatically provide those skills.

Run More! You can do it!

RunTeaming is an Android running league. Your best qualifying run of the week becomes your score on a five-runner team. The app supplies the team and matches it against another team near its level, so you do not recruit anyone or share a time or location.
